Marioshka Seat

Matrioshka Seat emerges from the need to rethink how furniture behaves in reduced living spaces. Instead of adding more pieces, the project explores how a single object can transform and adapt to different situations throughout the day.

Inspired by the logic of nesting and containment, the seat responds to changing domestic scenarios—being used individually, shared, rearranged, or stored—without demanding permanent space or complex mechanisms. Its value lies not in a fixed function, but in its ability to quietly adapt to the user’s needs.

The project proposes a flexible way of inhabiting small homes, where furniture becomes an active element in shaping space, enabling transformation, efficiency, and everyday adaptability.

Role & Scope

In this project, I worked as the designer responsible for redefining a common piece of domestic furniture. The challenge was to rethink a typical Zara Home–style auxiliary table—often solid, heavy, difficult to transport, and limited to a single function—and transform it into a more flexible, contemporary solution suited for small living spaces.

Strategy

The design approach focused on questioning the idea of fixed, static furniture. Instead of a massive object with one predefined use, I proposed a modular and demountable piece that could adapt to different situations.

By using recycled materials, the product becomes lighter, easier to transport, and more sustainable, without compromising stability or everyday usability. The strategy was to design a single object capable of multiple roles—seat, side table, or temporary storage—while remaining intuitive and easy to reconfigure.

Impact

Matrioshka Seat proposes a new way of inhabiting reduced spaces, where furniture adapts to the user rather than the other way around. Its lightweight, multifunctional, and sustainable design allows for easy movement, storage, and transformation, reducing the need for additional furniture.

The project highlights how rethinking material choice and structure can improve functionality, portability, and environmental impact, offering a more flexible and conscious alternative to conventional domestic furniture.
